Diamond Lake Yacht Club... Yesterday
It was on a Sunday afternoon in the Spring of 1938 when a group of sailors met on the front lawn of Joe Geary's summer home. They agreed it was time to organize a yacht club and sail under specific rules with handicaps for the many types of boats that were sailing at that time on Diamond Lake. As a result of this meeting, the Diamond Lake Yacht Club was formed; its object - to promote and conduct boat racing on Diamond Lake and to foster good fellowship among its membership. Forty-eight applicants for membership were approved that first year, and the first Bulletin, No. 1, dated August 1, 1938, advised the members that the Governing Board had approved a Constitution and bylaws as well as Racing Rules and Regulations.
An Invitational Regatta was held August 14, 1938, with boats entered from Camp Eberhart, Pine Lake, LaPorte, and St. Joseph, Michigan. A 3-day Regatta Labor Day weekend with the awarding of trophies was a fitting climax for the 10-day race schedule and Diamond Lake Yacht Club's first season.
Diamond Lake Yacht Club...Today
Since 1938 Diamond Lake Yacht Club has grown in membership and in stature within the Lake Community. All members, past and present, can take pride in what they've accomplished. We encourage prospective members to see what DLYC can offer you and your family. We invite you to join and share in the traditions of the past and the opportunities of the future. Originally organized as a sailing club, DLYC has broadened its purpose to include four basic areas of interest; sailing, youth development in the areas of swimming and sailing, lake preservation and social life.
The 2007 MC Michigan Championship Regatta will be hosted by MC Fleet 28, the weekend of July 14-15. Registration of boats and sailors will begin Friday, July 13, at 5:00 P.M. at the DLYC. Please check out Regatta Registration for detail or to register.
